  • Human trials of British COVID-19 vaccine to reach 10,000

Adrian Hill, director of Oxford's Jenner Institute, said that an upcoming trial, involving 10,000 volunteers threatened to return "no result" due to low transmission of COVID-19 in the community.

University of Oxford in England developed and licensed the vaccine candidate to AstraZeneca.

"The Trump administration is making multiple major investments in developing and manufacturing promising vaccines long before they're approved so that a successful vaccine will reach the American people without a day", he said. "We would like to thank the U.S. and United Kingdom governments for their substantial support in accelerating the development and production of the vaccine, we will do everything in our power to make this vaccine quickly and widely available".

Professor Hill stressed, however, that the University had secured "hardwired" assurances that wealthier countries would not have unfair priority access to the vaccine.

This comes days after pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca announced it would be ready to mass-produce the potential new vaccine from September.

Of the 10 vaccine candidates that have progressed to human trials globally, six are in China and it is the only country to have a candidate now firmly into phase two trials.

Phase one of the trial began in healthy adult volunteers in April, with more than 1,000 people involved.

Calling for globally coordinated efforts both to produce and share an eventual vaccine, Dr Berkley said worldwide agreement was needed to build up manufacturing capacity to rapidly produce a vaccine once one is found.

Next, phase 3 will assess how the vaccine works in a large number of people over the age of 18.

"We can use today's genetic engineering to make a vaccine that goes into the gut and delivers its payload", executive chairman Wayne Channon told AFP.

The main goal of the study is to find out whether this vaccine works against Covid-19, if it does not cause unacceptable side effects and if it induces a good immune response, as per the Oxford researchers.

Following the results, experts opine that Oxford University developed vaccine might be effective in controlling the disease from becoming severe, but can not prevent the infection in the animals.

He added: "I don't think there will be too many vaccines because when the disease disappears it will be hard to demonstrate efficacy".
