Today, Alexandra Quiros and Dunia Araya were the first same-sex couple to marry in Costa Rica, as marriage equality became legal in the country.

The move to marriage equality follows an August 2018 ruling by the country's Constitutional Court, which ruled that laws preventing same-sex marriage were unconstitutional. It failed to do that, so the provision was automatically annulled.

Enrique Sánchez, Costa Rica's first openly gay member of parliament, welcomed the change and praised those who had spent years lobbying for the same-sex marriage ban to be lifted.

Costa Rica would become the sixth country in Latin America to legalize same-sex marriage, following most recently Ecuador, which allowed it previous year. An extraordinary moment of celebration and gratitude to the work of so many activists, and of quiet reflection of the lives of those who lived without seeing this moment. In 2016, Costa Rica requested that the Inter-American Court of Human Rights interpret the right to privacy and the right to equal protection under the American Convention on Human Rights.

Despite considerable opposition from religious groups, gay marriage has become increasingly accepted in Latin America, with gay couples now allowed to marry in Argentina, Ecuador, Brazil, Colombia, Uruguay and parts of Mexico.

It helped propel President Carlos Alvarado to victory over an evangelical candidate, Fabricio Alvarado, who had campaigned against it.

"This change will bring about a significant social and cultural transformation, allowing thousands of people to marry", said President Carlos Alvarado in the program.

Gia Miranda, director of the "I do" campaign, said television coverage would also include segments on the movement's history in Costa Rica.

"During times where the country and the world face a hard situation with the pandemic, this historical milestone is even more relevant as a message of a better future for thousands of same sex couples and families that will receive the legal recognition that they deserve", commented Miranda. "This measure gives us the ability to protect and provide security to our family".

The wedding will be broadcasted live by Trece Costa Rica Televisión (Channel 13) and also through social media.
