Strongly admonishing the Chinese government, President Trump announced Friday that the USA was "terminating" its relationship with the World Health Organization and threatened to revoke longstanding financial benefits afforded to Hong Kong, to sanction Beijing for its crackdown on the semiautonomous territory.

Speaking in the Rose Garden at the White House, and amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the United States president said he wants to redirect funds into other organisations, as part of an anti- China address.

In a four-page letter detailing his grievances with the organization, Trump called on the WHO to "demonstrate independence from China", renewing his complaint that led him in April to temporarily suspend US funding.

Trump's comments came the same week that COVID-19 deaths in the USA topped 100,000 - the most in the world.

"Chinese officials ignored their reporting obligations to the World Health Organization and pressured the World Health Organization to mislead the world when the virus was first discovered by Chinese authorities", Trump said. Equities turned higher after Trump announced retaliation against China by withdrawing from the World Health Organization. He had previously suspended funding to the World Health Organization, complaining that it had been complicit with China in concealing the extent of risks posed by the coronavirus pandemic, which originated in Hubei province.

The US has contributed about 20 per cent of the WHO's overall budget over the past two years.

Trump's phrasing highlights the buildup of China-U.S. tensions amid the pandemic.

US President Donald Trump points to a questioner as he speaks about coronavirus.

Trump says the U.S. will redirect the US$450 million per year membership costs to other "worldwide and deserving urgent global health needs".

President Trump's move is expected to significantly weaken the organisation while it is in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. "We must have answers, not just for us, but the rest of the world".

The US has historically been the health agency's largest funder.
