  • British live sports to resume next week

No competitive top-level sport has taken place in Britain since March as the country deals with the coronavirus pandemic that has killed more than 38,000 people in the UK.

"The British sporting recovery has begun" the United Kingdom government proclaimed as it approved the return of domestic competitive action behind closed doors from June 1.

The first major live event is expected to be the 2000 Guineas horse race at Newmarket on June 6.

"The wait is over", Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said.

The government's latest plan for the resumption of elite level sport follow its "stage two" guidance published on May 25 which allowed elite athletes to resume group training under carefully controlled conditions.

As well as ensuring no spectators are present, sports bodies must also fulfil several other conditions if their events are to go ahead.

In light of the Government making clear that the Premier League should widen access for fans to view live coverage during the remainder of the season in light of ongoing social distancing measures, the Premier League has this week reached an agreement with its broadcast partners to televise a significant proportion of its remaining matches on free-to-air platforms, including Sky's "Pick" TV, that is available on Freeview, and for the first time in Premier League history, the BBC.

Dowden, however, said that was a matter for police and local authorities.

Professor Jonathan Van-Tam, the deputy chief medical officer, added a "crucial" point in the choice of any venue would be that it could "cope with the segregation and the organisation and the social distancing right up until the kick-off whistle until the final whistle to make that the safest possible experience for everybody there".

The first competitions to return on Monday are set to be horse racing, snooker and greyhound racing which lined up events in anticipation of the end of an 11-week shutdown of sports.

"We are working hard to get grassroots sport back up and running safely too, so that people can reunite with their own football, rugby or cricket teammates and get back on their pitches, fields or athletic tracks", Sports Minister Nigel Huddleston said.

Domestic cricket is suspended until August 1, while the Wimbledon tennis championships has been cancelled for the first time since World War II.

But the European Central Bank still hope to stage a full worldwide programme this season, starting with a delayed Test series against the West Indies provisionally rescheduled for July.

Speaking at the Downing Street briefing, the Government said sport's return would be a "nice fillip to us all" and ruled out fears that resuming sporting activities could significantly impact on national infection rates.
