The Falcon 9 took off on Saturday at 8.22pm United Kingdom time from the Launch Complex 39A at Cape Canaveral in Florida, carrying the Crew Dragon spacecraft.
A cam from the Space Station captured the docking procedure. check out the red, white and green lights that signify the progress as the Dragon capsule bellies up to its host.
Aboard the space station, Expedition 63 Commander and NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy and Russian cosmonauts Anatoly Ivanishin and Ivan Vagner are preparing to welcome Behnken and Hurley aboard the station, said NASA.
The docking was a delicate and risky part of the mission.
Hurley's and Behnken's job on the mission is to test all onboard systems and to give their feedback to engineers. Both NASA and SpaceX urged eager viewers to stay at home and not to flock towards the Kennedy Space Center at any time due to the ongoing coronaviruspandemic. "Their incredible efforts over the last several years to make this possible cannot go overstated", the astronaut added.
The mission went smoothly, ground officials said.
NASA managers conducted leak checks and communication checks, in preparation for opening the hatches and having Hurley and Behnken float into the orbital outpost.
"They made it. After launching from @NASAKennedy on the @SpaceX Dragon Endeavour spacecraft yesterday, @AstroBehnken and @Astro_Doug have officially joined the @Space_Station crew today at 1:02pm ET - making history in the process".
On the ISS, the astronauts will perform tests and join one USA astronaut and two Russians who are now onboard the station.
The two Americans, both spaceflight veterans, will spend up to four months orbiting Earth while engineers from SpaceX analyze every aspect of their spaceship's performance.
The Crew Dragon launched on Saturday, May 30, from the Kennedy Space Center Launch Complex 39A in Florida, US.
For the first time in almost nine years, astronauts have arrived at the International Space Station in a spaceship that was made in the USA.
It also marked the first time that commercially developed space vehicles - owned and operated by a private entity rather than Nasa - have carried Americans into orbit.
The astronauts have named the commercial spacecraft after one of the retired winged orbiters - "Endeavour".
On Sunday morning, the spacecraft made a careful approach to the space station and then made a "soft capture" - meaning Crew Dragon made its first physical contact with its docking port at the International Space Station.
But the CDC said it will likely never be known if the man was the first person in the USA with the virus. There was no indication the virus had been introduced into the US earlier, in November or December 2019.
