Red Bull says Mercedes against F1 reverse-grid race 'variable’

  • Red Bull urges Mercedes to back reversed-grid race proposal

Reportedly in a show of hands, only one team disapproved of trialing the format, that team apparently being Mercedes, but a formal vote will take place next week.

A proposal put forward last week was to run a reversed-grid qualifying race on Saturday to form the grid for Sunday's race.

After the July 5 and 12 races in Austria, the only other double-header now planned is at Silverstone, which - notwithstanding lack of clarity over exemptions from the United Kingdom government's new 14-day quarantine procedure for F1 personnel - will in theory host the fourth and fifth rounds, following a single race in Hungary.

But Horner insists it is highly improbable the reverse-grid idea would be voted in, with the Silver Arrows - who have won double titles in all of the last six seasons - holding too much power.

Amid a fresh push for sprint-style races, Horner believes it would be the "perfect time to try something different" but added that Mercedes is pushing back such a change because it "would interfere with Lewis Hamilton's championship campaign".

Horner believes it would be beneficial to give it a go, as he sees little value in running two identical races at the same venue as would likely result in a similar result.

According to a report from The Race, during a meeting between the FIA, Liberty Media and the teams on Friday, Liberty presented the idea of using one of each of the back-to-back races at the Red Bull Ring and Silverstone to hold a Saturday sprint race which would decide the grid for Sunday's race.

"And my view was rather than doing it at one race, let's do it at all the races where there are two races".

"[The proposal] seemed to get overwhelming support".

"Having races and being at the same venue for two consecutive weekends would seem a logical and timely place to introduce and try something".

Horner was adamant: "I think the prospect of drivers having to race through the field on the Sunday for the feature race, having to start from the back of the grid based on championship position, I think would be something really entertaining for the fans, something positive for Formula 1 and something we really shouldn't be afraid of trying. At the end of the day it is the same challenge for all drivers and all teams".

"He's a great driver, I'm sure he's given this a lot of thought and all we can do is wish him the best. Completely the wrong approach".

"The fact that now they are trying the reverse grid and all that feels like an excuse for not doing a good enough job". I don't think it's the solution for Formula One.
