MLS players ratify new CBA, paving way to return to play

  • The Vancouver Whitecaps including centreback Derek Cornelius took to the practice fields for the first time in months on Tuesday in physical-distancing training sessions at their UBC facility

However, that deal was not ratified before the coronavirus outbreak shut down the league, as the process to officially finalize an agreed-upon CBA takes time.

MLS and the union agreed February 6 to a five-year labor contract, but the deal had not been ratified when the season was stopped on March 12 after only two matches had been played by each team. MLS commissioner Don Garber was scheduled to speak later Wednesday.

The MLSPA said the vote "finalizes a plan to resume the 2020 season and provides players with certainty for the months ahead. It allows members to move forward and continue to compete in the game they love", the statement read, before underlining the league's pledge to help fight racism and strive for social justice.

Major League Soccer and the league's players union reached agreement on a labour deal on Wednesday, averting the prospect of a lockout which threatened to scupper a return to play following the coronavirus shutdown.

"We recognize that we are all moving forward - as players, as fans, as societies, as a world - into a future that looks much different than the one we envisioned a few months ago". There are problems we face collectively that are both more urgent, and more important, than competing on the field.

"We are grieving, we are fed up, we expect change, and we expect action". We hope our return to the field will allow fans a momentary release and a semblance of normalcy. Players from Atlanta, Miami, Minnesota and Vancouver did not report to voluntary training Monday. However, the CBA wasn't ratified and then the coronavirus pandemic forced the season to be suspended beginning March 12.

On Sunday night, the Players Association announced its membership had approved a package for the 2020 season including player salary reductions and additional concessions.

The vote means MLS will come out of its COVID-19 suspension with a summer tournament in the Orlando area.

League chiefs had reportedly sought to insert a force majeure clause which would allow the league to back out of the CBA if five or more teams suffered a 25 percent drop in attendance figures in the event of a major crisis.
