  • SpaceX's Crew Dragon makes history with successful docking at the ISS

The PUNCH reports that the rocket piloted by veteran NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley aboard blasted off on Saturday and entered the International Space Station on Sunday after a landmark 19-hour journey. It marked the first time that American astronauts were launched into space from USA soil since 2011. During that time they will perform technological and scientific studies before they return to Earth, which will be the final step, if successful, before beginning NASA operational missions funded by private firms.

NASA wants to be just one customer of many, noted Jim Morhard, the space agency's deputy administrator, who took part in the virtual bell ringing.

"Without further ado, we would like to welcome you aboard capsule Endeavour", Hurley said. "Those burned very rough for the first two and a half minutes", Hurley said. "The first stage with Falcon 9 was a much smoother ride". "So the first stage engine shut off, and then it takes a second - nearly a second, might have been less than that - but it seemed like it took some time between the booster separating and then the Merlin vacuum engine starting", Hurley said.

"There was a significant difference between the solid rocket booster on the shuttle and the second stage, and I think we all felt that separation", he added. LauncherOne didn't make it to space - a malfunction caused its own flight to end just seconds after it started, but the company says a lot went right, even if it didn't make orbit on this try.

On their arrival at the ISS, the astronauts were warmly welcomed by fellow NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy, commander of the Space Station's Expedition 63 and Russian cosmonauts Anatoly Ivanishin and Ivan Vagner.

As CNN " s John Berman was reporting during a telecast at the launch, he spun a bit of brilliance as to why the crew chose the song: "We were told the astronauts listened to "Back In Black' from AC/DC on their way to the rocket".
