  • WNBA postpones start of season this month because of virus

The WNBA announced Friday training camp and the start of the regular season will be postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic, which has brought sports to a grinding halt.

The league was scheduled to open training camps April 26 and the regular season was set to begin May 15. "We are grateful for the frontline workers, who are courageously combating COVID-19".

"The Lynx fully support the WNBA's decision today to postpone the start of the upcoming WNBA season", the Lynx announced in a release."The safety of our fans, players and staff is one of the utmost importance". Engelbert told the AP last week that the WNBA could begin its season before the National Basketball Association or other sports leagues resume.

"The league will put us in the best position to be safe and healthy", Sparks assistant coach Fred Williams said via text message. But with the Summer Games postponed, the WNBA has a little more leeway in terms of potential rescheduling. "As for now, we all must obey the national rules". OR guard Sabrina Ionescu is expected to be the No. 1 overall selection by the New York Liberty.

Engelbert said the league planned to carry out a "virtual draft" on April 17.

The number of positive COVID-19 cases has grown to more than 240,000 in the US with more than 6,000 deaths as of Friday afternoon, according to data from Johns Hopkins University and Medicine.

It had been expected, with the extended social distancing guidelines by the federal government and various sporting entities canceling events into July.

Most players go overseas to continue playing during the WNBA offseason and have made their way back over the last few months as the COVID-19 virus has spread and forced cities and countries to lock down.

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee's order is in effect through May 4.
