Police have identified a German national as the new prime suspect in the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in Portugal 13 years ago, as a fresh global appeal for information was launched.

The first, (+351) 912 730 680, is believed to have been used by the suspect and received a call from another Portuguese mobile, (+351) 916 510 683, while in the Praia da Luz area, starting at 7.32pm and ending at 8.02pm on the night of May 3 2007.

They are appealing for information about the van and the suspect's other vehicle, a Jaguar.

The man transferred it to someone else's name the day after she vanished.

"Someone out there knows a lot more than they're letting on", DCI Mark Cranwell, who's leading the Met inquiry, told BBC.

Her parents say Madeleine went missing after they had left her and her twin siblings asleep in their holiday complex while they had dinner with friends at a nearby restaurant.

- July 4: Scotland Yard confirms it has launched its own investigation, Operation Grange, into Madeleine's disappearance two years into a review of the case. British police now say a German man has been identified as a suspect.

This individual, who will not be identified, is now in prison in Germany for an unrelated matter.

An appeal on German television was broadcast this evening at 19:15 BST.

"We have established that he lived on and off in the Algarve between 1995 and 2007", the force said in a statement, adding that he was "connected to the area of Praia da Luz", where Madeleine disappeared on 3 May 2007, aged three.

Launching an appeal for information, police cited in particular two vehicles the suspect was known to have used as well as two phone numbers.

They also want the person who called the suspect to come forward.

"Some people will know the man we're describing today. you may be aware of some of the things he's done", he said.

At the time of Madeleine's disappearance he was 30 years old.

More than 13 years have passed and your loyalties may have changed.

Det Chief Insp Cranwell appealed to anyone who knew the suspect and who may have information in relation to Madeleine's case to come forward.

The prosecutor's office in Braunschweig - a city in northwestern Germany - is carrying out the investigation because the suspect's last registered address before going overseas was in the region.

After an appeal in 2017, "significant" fresh information about him was provided.

"Our main line of inquiry is this suspect", said Stuart Cundy, the Met's deputy assistant commissioner.

British police said they retained an open mind about the man's involvement and did not have any definitive evidence whether McCann was alive or not.
