Serbia midfielder Katai's wife was asked to remove the Instagram posts immediately by the MLS franchise.

The LA Galaxy released midfielder Aleksandar Katai following racist social media posts made by his wife, Tea, the team announced on Friday.

The decision comes two days after the LA Galaxy spoke out regarding her since-deleted posts, which according to the Associated Press, called protesters "disgusting cattle" in Serbian, among other profane claims.

Prior to Thursday's meeting, the team released a statement saying it "strongly condemned the social posts and requested their immediate removal". The club issued a statement against racism "suggesting violence" or undermining "those in pursuit of racial equality", while the 29-year-old, whose salary is said to have exceeded $612,500, said his wife's views were "unacceptable" and "not tolerated in my family".

Galaxy and Katai swiftly denounced the vitriolic posts. The Galaxy reached a financial arrangement with Katai and are not responsible for paying the remainder of his contract. On Thursday, a handful of fans gathered by the David Beckham statue outside the club's stadium holding a banner reading "No Racists in Our Club" along with a circle and a red line through No. 7, Katai's uniform number.

The Galaxy said Tea Katai was in Chicago when she made the posts while her husband was in Southern California participating in voluntary individual workouts alongside teammates at Dignity Health Sports Park.

Katai, who had started the first two matches of the MLS season before it was suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic, was expected to be an important part of the team's attacking line-up alongside Javier "Chicharito" Hernndez and Cristian Pavn.

He came to the Los Angeles club this season from the Chicago Fire and previously also played for Deportivo Alaves in the Spanish league.
