  • Free childcare across Australia to end on July 12

Childcare fees will resume from July 13, and the JobKeeper payment for childcare sector workers will end soon after on July 20.

This shift has sparked opposition claims of a broken promise, because Scott Morrison told reporters last week the jobkeeper scheme had been legislated to apply for six months "and people can count on that".

Education Minister Dan Tehan has announced the $1.6 billion childcare package, which entitled parents to free childcare amid the coronavirus pandemic, will end on July 12.

"This package works to help and support those families but also to help and support the sector", Mr Tehan added.

This mean centres will be able to charge parents fees again from 13 July and the government will resume paying the childcare subsidy - with the latter funding estimated to be worth about $2bn this quarter.

The previous activity test will also be eased until 4 October, supporting eligible families whose employment has been affected by Covid-19.

Tear gas banned in Seattle protests for the next 30 days
It followed a large, peaceful demonstration earlier with medical workers demonstrating against racism and police brutality. Authorities said rocks, bottles and explosives were thrown at officers in the Capitol Hill neighborhood Saturday night.

Dan Tehan made the announcement on Monday.

'These families will receive up to 100 hours per fortnight of subsidised care during this period, ' Mr Tehan said.

"So a package which was there as a temporary relief package which was there for when demand is falling now needs to transition and that is exactly what we are doing".

But Labor's early childhood education and development spokeswoman, Amanda Rishworth, said the snap back to the old childcare arrangements "will snap families" and "could well act as a hand brake on the economy". "This will assist families to return to the level of work, study or training they were undertaking before COVID-19".

Instead, the government will pay childcare services a transition payment of 25 per cent of their fee revenue in a $708 million parachute package.
