  • Another Daily COVID-19 Record in US, Cases Increase in 31 States

Sparked by new records in California, Florida and Texas, Wednesday marks the most recorded coronavirus cases in a single day in the United States.

Other local governments have enacted mandates requiring masks in public.

In California, which reported a record 7,149 new confirmed cases on Wednesday, Walt Disney said it was delaying reopening of its Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park originally set for 17 July.

Texas, which has been at the forefront of moves to end lockdown measures, has seen thousands of new cases, prompting Republican Governor Greg Abbott to call a temporary halt to its reopening. China reported 19 new cases nationwide amid mass testing in the capital.

The governor of the southern Campania region insisted that the workers, who live in an apartment complex with dozens of COVID-19 cases, stay inside for just over two weeks, not even emerging for food - authorities will deliver groceries to them.

The Reuters tally of 45,242 cases differs from statistics provided by Johns Hopkins University, which said 39,972 cases were recorded Friday, bringing the total positive case load to more than 2,467,000.

Imperial County health officials later tweeted that its stay-at-home order imposed in March remained in place.

Whether the increase in reported cases will be matched by a surge in deaths will depend on a number of factors, according to public health experts, such as the age of those infected, individual risk factors and the availability of medical care.

Deaths from the novel coronavirus in the United States are, however, down to around 600 per day, compared with about 2,200 in mid-April. Worldwide, the virus has claimed close to a half-million lives, according to Johns Hopkins. Gov. Ducey said: "COVID-19 is widespread in Arizona". And Nevada's governor ordered the wearing of face masks in public, including in Las Vegas casinos.

The new cases equal the largest single-day increase in Florida at this point in the pandemic.

In addition to closing bars again, Abbott scaled back restaurant capacity and shut down rafting operations, and said any outdoor gatherings of more than 100 people will need approval from the local government.

India, which has the world's second-largest population, has seen regular record daily increases. Florida confirmed 3,200 new cases on Tuesday, which marked the sixth day of more than 25,000 cases.
