Trump Signs Executive Order to Protect American Monuments from Vandalism

  • US President Donald Trump on Friday said that he had signed a very strong executive order to protect the country’s monuments and statues from vandalism

The president recently called on Republicans to be stronger against the violent leftist mobs tearing down and vandalizing statues and monuments and unleashing physical violence on people recording them on camera. "Long prison terms for these lawless acts against our Great Country!"

The tweet came after Trump tweeted a "wanted" poster claiming he will be punishing the protestors who tried to vandalise the statue of former US President Andrew Jackson, which is housed in the park opposite the White House. "But no individual or group has the right to damage, deface, or remove any monument by use of force", Trump said.

Trump had authorized government officials to arrest the people involved in bringing down statues, adding that the measure could be applied retroactively.

Announcing his plan to skip a weekend at his New Jersey home, he said: "The arsonists, anarchists, looters, and agitators have been largely stopped..."

In an interview with Fox News broadcast on Tuesday, the president said he was anxious that the campaigns around the country to remove statues would lead Americans to forget the "heritage" and "culture" of the nation. Other reported incidents of vandalism were the tearing down of statues of St. Junipero Serra and Francis Scott Key.

The order would "reinforce" existing federal law, which criminalizes the destruction of federal monuments. "10 year prison sentences!"

In the CNN report, it was pointed out that Trump allies had been pushing the administration to take a stance on racial issues, one even put it, "pick a lane" and display leadership over the issue. "President Trump will never allow violence to control our streets, rewrite our history, or harm the American way of life".

The White House ordered the Department of Agriculture Wednesday to provide financial assistance to lobstermen in ME, who have been hurt by President Trump's trade war with China and the European Union.

In Washington, protesters have pulled down a statue of Confederate general Albert Pike, while others this week were unsuccessful in their attack on a statue of President Andrew Jackson, a slave owner, near the White House.

In Washington, D.C., on Friday, activists were expected to demand the removal of a statue of a standing Abraham Lincoln looming over a kneeling black man and his broken shackles.
