  • Labour appoints Kate Green as new shadow education secretary after sacking of Rebecca-Long Bailey

"A bad thing happens to George Floyd and the Israeli defence force is somehow singled out".

Former shadow chancellor John McDonnell was among those on the left of the party to reject claims that Ms Peake's comments were anti-Semitic and said he stood "in solidarity" with Ms Long-Bailey.

She replaces Rebecca Long-Bailey, who was sacked this week after sharing a story Sir Keir said contained an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory.

Sir Keir later defended his decision to sack shadow minister Mrs Long-Bailey after a virtual meeting with some left-wing Labour MPs who had voiced concerns about her removal. The general secretary of the Unite union, Len McCluskey, said it was an overreaction in a "confected row" and risked disuniting the party.

"The reason why the Maxine Peake interview [was a problem] is not that it had a criticism of the state of Israel".

But he insisted critics of Israeli coverage nevertheless experienced a put in the get together.

She refused to take down a tweet with the link to an interview with Peake where she claimed police linked to the death of George Floyd in the U.S. had learned their tactics from the Israeli secret services.

"The problem is that over the centuries when calamitous things have happened, Jews have been blamed".

"I think she made a significant error of judgment".

He said Sir Keir is trying to stop Labour being "mired" in issues that are a "stain" on the party. However there have been claims from those who backed Long-Bailey for the leadership that it was a factional move, with members threatening to quit the party. Miliband was joined by shadow work and pensions secretary Jonathan Reynolds in defending Labour leader Sir Keir's decision, which has prompted a backlash from those on the left of the party.

Sir Keir said he had acted in order to rebuild trust with the Jewish community after years in which Labour has been embroiled in allegations of anti-Semitism under his predecessor, Jeremy Corbyn.

The Stalybridge and Hyde MP told Sky News's Sophy Ridge on Sunday show that the sharing of an antisemitic conspiracy theory was not something that could be ignored. Keir promised zero tolerance and that has to mean zero tolerance.

"Throughout time there has been an antisemitism that has been about blaming Jewish people for all the problems in the world".

This new kind of blurring of the line between Judaism and the state of Israel can not be in the interests of Jews worldwide.

"If someone is looking at the awful scenes in America and somehow trying to change the blame to Israel, the antisemitic warning lights should be flashing to anyone who sees that in print or hears something like that".
