Texas reported more than 17,000 confirmed new cases over the past three days, with a record high of almost 6,000 on Thursday.

The 10-million milestone comes as many hard-hit countries are easing lockdowns while making extensive alterations to work and social life that could last for a year or more until a vaccine is available.

Coronavirus cases are also spiking in South America - most notably in Brazil, which has seen more than 1.2 million confirmed cases and more than 57,000 reported deaths, according to Johns Hopkins' data.

Some US leaders, including President Donald Trump, have said that the significant increase in cases is a product of increased testing capacity in the US, though experts have said that's not accurate as a greater share of tests administered has returned positive results. Meanwhile, Washington state paused its return to normal because of a rising number of cases and concerns about continued spread of the virus.

As populous states including Florida and Texas recorded surging case numbers this week, state officials tightened restrictions on business again.

The US leads the nations of the world in cases by far, accounting for well over a third of the global total.

The U.S. remained the No. 1 nation in both confirmed infections and deaths, with 2.5 million cases and more than 125,000 fatalities, according to the university's tally.

India set a daily record on Saturday with more than 18,500 new cases and 385 deaths, bringing its total of registered cases to 500,000.

Since restrictions to stem spread of the virus were gradually lifted from mid-April, cases have increased again. Some, like Germany, are experiencing a resurgence, forcing local governments to reimpose partial lockdowns.

Brazil isn't alone: Peru, Chile, and Mexico have all reported more than 200,000 coronavirus cases. Tens of millions of Chinese traveled during the three-day Dragon Boat Festival, which ended Saturday, with anti-crowding measures in force nationwide.
