The new court documents, however, add more details about his alleged contacts with the two hacking groups.

According to the DOJ, Assange got unauthorised access to a government computer system of a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation country in 2010.

An Anonymous and LulzSec-affiliated hacker hacked into an American intelligence consulting company, and WikiLeaks published the hacked emails.

The LulzSec leader was cooperating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation at the time, according to the statement.

Assange is still detained in the United Kingdom facing extradition to the US.

Assange was arrested by British police in Ecuador's London embassy in April 2019 after the country revoked his asylum protection.

Assange is now being held at Belmarsh prison in London and has reportedly been unable to attend court hearings in his extradition case owing to poor health.

His full extradition hearing is set to take place on September 7, having originally been scheduled for May 18, although a crown court has not yet been found to take the case.

According to the new superseding indictment [PDF] unsealed Wednesday, Assange and others at WikiLeaks also recruited hackers at conferences in Europe and Asia and conspired with them to commit computer intrusions to benefit WikiLeaks.

If found guilty on all counts, Assange could face a total maximum sentence of 175 years in the US prison for his alleged role in "one of the largest compromises of classified information in the history of the United States".

Wikileaks posted on Twitter Wednesday that the "new Superseding Indictment against Julian Assange is a further pathetic attempt by the DOJ to dupe the public". "The indictment continues to charge him with violating the Espionage Act based on WikiLeaks publications exposing war crimes committed by the U.S. Government".

Reportedly, Assange is charged with a second superseding indictment where he's accused of recruiting and conspiring with hackers to carry out cybercrimes on his behalf. In highlighting one instance, federal prosecutors allege that Assange instructed a LulzSec hacker to target a specific organization and look for data such as e-mails, documents, databases and PDFs.

Through various proxies, Assange also allegedly worked with the hacking groups Gnosis and AntiSec to solicit materials for WikiLeaks. "In 2012, Assange communicated directly with a leader of the hacking group LulzSec, and provided a list of targets for LulzSec to hack".

The Justice Department has already charged him with conspiring with former U.S. Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning in one of the largest compromises of classified information in U.S. history by working together to crack a password to a government computer. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Tracy Doherty-McCormick, Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kellen S. Dwyer, Thomas W. Traxler, Alexander P. Berrang, and Gordon D. Kromberg, and Trial Attorneys Adam L. Small and Nicholas O. Hunter of the Justice Department's National Security Division are prosecuting the case. The US prosecutors allege that Assange, in collaboration with Manning, stole documents from databases containing almost 250,000 State Department cables, 400,000 Iraq war-related reports, and 90,000 Afghanistan war-related reports.
