  • A bronze statue of late actor John Wayne stands before a four-storey high United States flag at John Wayne Orange County Airport in Santa Ana California

According to those behind the calls for Wayne's name to be removed, the campaign is part of "a national movement to remove white supremacist symbols and names (that are) reshaping American institutions, monuments, businesses, nonprofits, sports leagues and teams".

In the latest move to change place names in light of United States racial history, leaders of Orange County's Democratic Party are pushing to drop film legend John Wayne's name, statue and other likenesses from the county's airport because of his racist and bigoted comments.

"It is widely recognized that racist symbols produce lasting physical and psychological stress and trauma particularly to Black communities, people of color and other oppressed groups".

"While some outside Orange County may not know of John Wayne's beliefs in white supremacy, many Orange County residents have been calling for his removal for years", county party chairwoman Ada Briceño said in a statement.

Despite his remarks, the airport was named after John Wayne in 1979, approximately eight years after the interview with Playboy.

Democrats in Orange County are calling for the film legend's name, statue and other likenesses to be removed from Santa Ana airport because of "racist and bigoted statements" made by the actor.

The actor, best known for his leading roles in Western films, made several racist statements in a 1971 interview with Playboy Magazine, even admitting he was a believer in white supremacy.

Wayne also said in the interview that he didn't feel guilty about the fact that many generations ago, many black Americans were slaves. "I don't believe in giving authority and positions of leadership and judgment to irresponsible people".

He also took aim at Native American people.

"I don't feel we did wrong in taking this great country away from them", he said, pointing out that people needed land and Indians were "selfishly trying to keep it for themselves". (O) ur so-called stealing of this country from them was just a matter of survival, ' he said. Additionally, Wayne used homophobic language to describe characters from Midnight Cowboy.

This is not the first time that there has been a push to rename the airport.

He was 63 when he made the remarks.

Orange County Supervisor Don Wagner told the Times that he had just heard about the Democratic resolution and was unaware of its wording or merit.

According to LA Times, Wayne lived a portion of his life in Newport Beach.
