Reiner wrote four volumes of memoirs, including "I Just Remembered" in 2014, as well as children's books.

It starred Van Dyke as a television comedy writer working for a demanding, eccentric boss (Reiner) and living with his wife (Mary Tyler Moore in her first major TV role) and young son in suburban New Rochelle, N.Y. He is best known for creating and starring in the "The Dick Van Dyke Show", which earned him five Emmy Awards.

Born Carlton Reiner on March 20, 1922, in New York City, Reiner showed an early interest in acting as a teenager. He also appeared as Alan Brady, the egotistical and overbearing boss to Van Dyke's character, stealing numerous scenes and episodes he appeared in. "He was my guiding light", Rob Reiner tweeted on Tuesday.

Though Reiner made some notable on-screen appearances, his career was largely based behind the camera as a writer, director and producer.

He got his start by appearing in several Broadway musicals, including "Inside U.S.A." and "Alive and Kicking" before securing the lead role in "Call Me Mister". After joining the service's performing unit, Reiner broke into showbiz after hostilities finished, landing a spot on Your Show of Shows in 1950, where he would collaborate with the likes of Brooks and Neil Simon.

During his legendary career, Reiner brought home many prestigious awards and even more nominations.

In one hugely popular skit with the latter, Reiner played a straight man interviewer to Brooks's "2001 Year Old Man".

The pairing helped launch the careers of both men and spawned multiple comedy albums and a TV special.

Reiner was known for directing a number of films too such as Oh God! and The Jerk.

"The Van Dyke show is probably the most thrilling of my accomplishments, because that was very, very personal", Reiner once said.

As a result of its success, Reiner moved into feature-film-making: his directorial debut was Enter Laughing in 1967, adapted from his own autobiography about a Jewish kid trying to break into showbusiness. He recounted his childhood and creative journey in the 2013 book, I Remember Me.

"Carl Reiner was comedy genius", Alexander tweeted. After its impressive box office figures, the pair made three more films in a row - Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid (1982), The Man with Two Brains (1983) and All of Me (1984) - all of which were substantial successes. Reiner's wife of 64 years, Estelle, died in 2008.

Later, Reiner appeared in the remake of "Ocean's Eleven" and the sequels "Ocean's Twelve" and "Ocean's Thirteen" as Saul Bloom.

Carl Reiner himself was active on Twitter and recently shared a sweet tribute to his family before his death. Associated Press contributed to the report.
