  • Facebook purges US 'boogaloo' extremists trying to kickstart a new civil war

Facebook took action to remove a network of accounts Tuesday related to the "boogaloo" movement, a firearm-obsessed anti-government ideology that focuses on preparing for and potentially inciting a USA civil war.

The Facebook bans come amid a renewed push to cleanse social media platforms of conservatives and those right-of-center, with similar purges on Monday targeting pro-Trump accounts on Twitch and Reddit, as well as a number of other right-leaning figures on YouTube. The social network is not banning all references to "boogaloo" and said it is only removing groups, accounts and pages when they have a "clear connection to violence or a credible threat to public safety".

The loose movement is named after "Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo", a 1984 sequel to a movie about breakdancing.

The move by Facebook designates this group as a risky organization similar to the Islamic State group and white supremacists, both of which are already banned from its service.

Facebook said the movement dates back to 2012 and that it has been tracking it closely since a year ago.

The Boogaloo movement rose to national prominence during the coronavirus pandemic lockdown protests.

Earlier in June, Steven Carrillo, an Air Force sergeant with ties to the boogaloo movement, fatally shot a federal security officer and wounded his partner outside a US courthouse, ambushed and killed a California sheriff's deputy and injured four other officers in Oakland, California. In the letter, addressed to Mark Zuckerberg, lawmakers cited activity by members of boogaloo groups as part of Facebook's "failure to address the hate spreading on its platform".

The statement was followed by two fire emojis and a link to a YouTube video showing a large crowd attacking two California Highway Patrol vehicles.

Facebook announced that is banning a far-right antigovernment "boogaloo" group from its platform. According to the FBI "soup bois" may be a term that followers of the boogaloo movement used to refer to federal law enforcement agents.

Violent and extremist groups are increasingly turning to encrypted communications networks and fringe social platforms with no content moderation to congregate, which makes them more hard to track.

Facebook (FB) on Tuesday banned hundreds of accounts, groups and pages that it said were linked to the Boogaloo movement, a loosely organized extremist collective whose members have occasionally shown up armed to racial justice and anti-quarantine protests around the country. The social network also removed 400 additional groups and 100 more pages that it said hosted content similar to that of the banned Boogaloo accounts.

Facebook said that it had seen no evidence of foreign entities covertly amplifying the movement. Ninety-five accounts on Facebook-owned Instagram also got the boot.

Advocacy groups Facebook in April that the Boogaloo movement was organizing on its platform.
