  • NBC reacquires broadcast rights to USGA’s full slate of championships

In 2015, Fox Sports signed a 12-year deal with USGA to serve as the broadcaster for the USGA championships, which included the U.S. Amateur, U.S. Women's Amateur, U.S. Women's Open and, most notably, the men's U.S. Open. The report also said that the decision for Fox Sports to drop its rights came when the option of moving the tournament to FS1 for this year was not received well by the USGA.

The U.S. Open at Winged Foot in Mamaroneck, N.Y. was moved from June to September 17-20, causing competition for air time with the network's NFL, college football and Major League Baseball commitments.

The two sides have had a rocky relationship dating back to Fox first winning the rights despite having never aired the sport, Golf Digest reported in 2017. The contract, which they won in 2013, was for 12 years and $1.2 billion, meaning they were paying $100 million per year.

The U.S. Open returns to Oakmont Country Club in 2025. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because that detail was not publicly announced.

The agreement granted Fox major championship golf for the first time ever, but, according to the Associated Press, the rights will revert back to NBC starting with the 2020 U.S. Open, which will now take place from September 17-20 at Winged Foot in NY after being postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

One person said NBC would pay for just under half of the rights fee through the rest of the contract.

USA network NBC is poised to regain rights to United States Golf Association events including the U.S. Open, one of golf's majors, after the Fox Sports division of the Fox network requested to end its 12-year contract, according to multiple reports.

"Partnering with NBCUniversal, including Golf Channel, gives us an unparalleled opportunity to connect and engage with the core golf audience more directly and routinely", Davis said. The USGA did not reveal financial information.

The rescheduled U.S. Open will reportedly be on NBC after Fox asked out of the deal.

NBC is once again home to the U.S. Open and the USGA's full slate of championships.

"While we are proud of the success we've built over these years, this is a win for golf fans everywhere, a win for the USGA and a win for FOX and NBC Sports". It also will have the FedEx Cup playoffs every other year when the new media rights deal with the PGA Tour begins, along with all majors on the LPGA Tour and PGA Tour Champions.

"Adding these prestigious USGA events to our already incredibly deep golf business, led by our long-term PGA Tour partnership, as well as The Open Championship and Ryder Cup, positions us as absolute leaders in the golf space", NBC Sports president Pete Bevacqua said.
