  • NASA video shows 10-year time lapse of Sun in 61 minutes

NASA has now combined some of this data into a 60 minute time-lapse of the Sun.

SDO was released on February 11, 2010.

NASA's SDO snaps a picture of the Sun every 0.75 seconds. Throughout that time, SDO has captured 425 million high-resolution images of the Sun that equates to a staggering 20 million gigabytes of data. According to NASA, this information has facilitated astronomers in making various discoveries about the inner workings of our Sun and their effect on the solar system.

While SDO has kept an unblinking eye pointed towards the Sun, there have been a few moments it missed, NASA said.

But the space probe is home to many different instruments and not just one powerful camera.

This 10-calendar year time-lapse showcases shots taken at a wavelength of 17.1 nanometers, which is an severe ultraviolet wavelength that reveals the Sun's outermost atmospheric layer - the corona.

SDO is equipped with three instruments, the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA), EUV Variability Experiment (EVE) and the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI). Each second of the video represents one day in the sun's life, and the entire decade blazes by in about 60 minutes (though you can see our 6-minute highlight reel above).

The video clip exhibits the increase and tumble in activity that occurs as section of the Sun's 11-calendar year photo voltaic cycle and noteworthy events, like transiting planets and eruptions.

Although the SDO has been focused directly at the sun for the past decade, the video has some dark frames caused by the Earth or the moon passing between the satellite and the sun.

The video features a custom soundtrack, "Solar Observer" which was composed by musician Lars Leonhard.

The photos wherever the Solar is off-heart were being observed when SDO was calibrating its instruments.
