  • US stocks up on hiring data, virus vaccine progress

Pfizer and its German partner, BioNTech said their vaccine for the new coronavirus has shown potential in early-stage human trials.

Pfizer stock also gained, rising 4.4% to $34.13.

Higher antibody levels in patients who'd received the vaccine are a useful proxy for immunity to covid-19, but we don't yet know for sure that they guarantee immunity. The higher-dose shot caused more injection reactions without apparent added benefit.

An ongoing collaborative Phase1/2 clinical trial in the United States and involving 45 participants aged between 18 and 55 have received either 10, 30, or 100 microgram doses of the drug BNT162b1 vaccine or a placebo over 21 days.

Researchers, including those from New York University in the USA, who were involved in the study, said the candidate vaccine enables human cells to produce an optimised version of the receptor binding domain (RBD) antigen - a part of the spike (S) protein of SARS-CoV-2 which it uses to gain entry into human cells.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index jumped 1.53 percent to 22:46 Eastern time (03:46 GMT) on the first day of trading after the entry into force of the law on national security passed by the National Congress of China on Tuesday. "We look forward to providing further data updates on BNT162b1", said Ugur Sahin, the CEO and Co-founder of BioNTech, in a statement.

The pharmaceutical industry is eager to launch larger follow-up trials to see how vaccinated participants react to real infections over longer periods.

The study, which is yet to be peer-reviewed, describes the preliminary clinical data for the candidate vaccine - nucleoside-modified messenger RNA (modRNA), BNT162b1. If the vaccine is successful, the companies expect to manufacture up to 100 million doses by the end of this year and potentially more than 1.2 billion doses by the end of 2021.

U.S. stocks closed mixed on Wednesday as investors weighed COVID-19 vaccine progress against a spike in national virus cases.

Biotech investors Thomas and Andreas Struengmann, who sold their generic drugs business Hexal to Novartis in 2005, are major shareholders of BioNTech.
