North Korea suspends military action plans against South Korea: KCNA

  • Much of Bolton’s memoir on Korea distorted: Seoul

Talks collapsed in February after the leaders failed to agree on the extent of sanctions relief in exchange for disarmament steps and other details.

The political tension in the Korean Peninsula is getting harder after North destroyed inter-Korean liaison office last week, Andalou Agency says. But he warned that Seoul will respond firmly to any threats.

The South Korean Unification Ministry called for a halt to such leaflet campaigns.

In the South, the remains of almost 150 soldiers repatriated from Hawaii after being excavated in the North were to be formally received at a government ceremony on Thursday evening, themed "Salute to the Heroes".

Tension between the two Koreas has risen in recent weeks after the North blew up a joint liaison office on its side of the border, declared an end to dialogue and threatened military action to show its displeasure against defectors and South Korea for not stopping them from sending anti-Pyongyang leaflets. In 2017, North Korea warned of a strike against the US territory of Guam that never materialized.

The fighting ended with an armistice that was never replaced by a peace treaty, leaving the peninsula divided by the Demilitarized Zone and the two Koreas still technically at war.

The North has a different history of the conflict, which it knows as the Victorious Fatherland Liberation War, and insists that it was attacked first, before it counter-assaulted.

North Korea also began removing propaganda loudspeakers it had recently reinstalled on the DMZ, according to South Korean media.

"We remain ready to defend [South Korea] at a moment's notice", Abrams said.

Former US National Security Adviser John Bolton on Tuesday defended his remarks on South Korea in his newly published memoir, saying it would be a "disservice" to the South Korean people if he didn't write the truth.

Moon oversaw a ceremony in which the USA military repatriated the remains of 147 South Korean soldiers who died in the war.

Six sets of U.N. remains found by South Korean search crews also were being returned to the US defense agency in charge of recovering and identifying the nation's missing service members.

Its anger at the leaflets sent from the South appears eventually aimed at pushing Seoul into resuming major inter-Korean projects at the risk of breaching US-led worldwide sanctions imposed on the communist state for its nuclear and ballistic missile tests.

Leader Kim Jong-un presided over a preliminary meeting of the Central Military Commission via videoconferencing on Tuesday and made a decision to hold off for now any military action plans against Seoul, KCNA said.

But at a meeting chaired by leader Kim Jong-un, state media said the decision was taken to suspend military action. Few outside experts believe this claim; KCNA could potentially be preparing to offer a more realistic panorama of the health situation in the country by blaming the United States.
