The Mississippi state flag will be officially retired at a ceremony on Wednesday afternoon.

"MDAH is grateful to the state legislature for presenting these flags from the capitol to us for our historic collection", said MDAH director Katie Blount.

MS faced increasing pressure in recent weeks to change its 126-year-old flag since protests against racial injustice have focused attention on Confederate symbols.

"This is not an end, but a beginning", Gunn said.

MS began grappling with the flag once again this spring as a result of the death of George Floyd in the custody of the Minneapolis police, which rapidly evolved into a sprawling expression of fury and exasperation over the countless manifestations of the nation's tangled racial history. "I don't agree with the process that they went through to take it down". Governor Reeves says he understands the need to retire the 126-year-old flag but also recognizes some Mississippians who won't. Voters will have the chance to approve the design in November, Reeves' office said in a statement. White supremacist legislators put it on the upper-left corner of the MS flag in 1894, as white people were squelching political power that African Americans had gained after the Civil War. The state's governor at the time, a Confederate veteran and former colonel of the Second Mississippi Infantry Regiment, noted that the state lacked an official flag and urged lawmakers to adopt one, according to the state historical society.

Amid a renewed national focus on racial injustice, MS had faced growing pressure from business, religious, sports and civic leaders and institutions to change its flag, the last in the nation to sport the Confederate emblem. A commission will design a new one that can not include the Confederate symbol and must have the words "In God We Trust". If they reject it, the commission will draft a different banner and another public vote.

Honor Guard members pulled the flag down from the flag pole and folded it ahead of a retirement ceremony.

He said the demonstrations inspired by Floyd's killing "had a tremendous impact" on the effort to remove the old flag. "A burial that was happening and an end to something that has been so disheartening for black folks in MS". We are a people of great faith. Like the USA flag - we as Americans rally around it. Maybe now we can rally around a symbol as Mississippians. "I do think this was the right thing to do".
