  • The government is taking steps such as framing technical regulations and quality norms for several products to cut dependence on China for imports

Curbing these imports is on the agenda of a virtual meeting of Union power minister R.K. Singh with state power and renewable energy ministers, the people said on condition of anonymity.

Union Power Minister R K Singh has said, India will not allow import of power supply equipment from China without permission from the government.

He added that such an import may be used as a Trojan Horse element which can be potentially used to trigger a power grid shutdown in the country.

The Union minister had said that countries who are adversaries, or potential adversaries will be identified as "prior reference countries", and government permission will be required before importing any equipment from there. "Power is a very sensitive and strategic sector for any country", he had said.

India has said 20 of its soldiers were killed in a clash last month with Chinese troops in a major escalation of a weeks-long standoff between the two countries in the western Himalayas.

A week ago, on June 26, Singh had said a new duty structure for power equipment to discourage imports was being implemented.

On Monday night, the government banned 59, mostly Chinese, mobile apps including Bytedance's TikTok and Tencent's WeChat, citing its need to protect India's "sovereignty and integrity".

"We manufacture everything here". He stressed that under the Atamnirbhar Bharat mission, India will not import any equipment from China which is available here and will go for inspection of imported equipment. It is also one of the top-10 imported items from China. A similar approved list of modules and manufacturers is in the works for the conventional power sector as well. About 9,570 MW of under-construction power plants - all from the private sector - have contracted with Chinese companies for supplying boilers, turbines and generators, according to official estimates figures.

"Indian companies are the big winners, and this move will make European and Japanese equipments manufacturers competitive here", said Sunil Misra, director-general of the Indian Electrical and Electronics Manufacturers' Association.

Chinese banks and financial institutions have liberally given long-term credit facilities to India's power companies to promote the business of the country's equipment manufacturers and this has indeed worked for that country.

The Indian Express is now on Telegram.
