Bharti, via its Bharti Airtel division, is the third largest mobile operator in the world, with over 425 million customers, and has "its own extensive mobile broadband networks and enterprise business, which will act as the testing ground for all OneWeb products, services, and applications".

The company went bankrupt earlier this year after running into financial troubles amid chronic global economic fallout from the deadly coronavirus.

Indian telecom Bharti will also invest $500m, which will "bring OneWeb a revenue base to contribute towards its future success", the government said on Friday.

Alok Sharma, the business secretary, insisted the OneWeb investment would pay off for the UK.

OneWeb is a London-based company already, and its constellation can provide access to low latency, high-speed broadband via low Earth orbit small satellites, which could potentially be a great resource for connecting United Kingdom citizens to affordable, quality connections.

'The commitment of HMG accelerates OneWeb's global access, ' it said.

In a separate statement, Bharti Enterprises announced that "a UK Government consortium led by Bharti has won the bid for OneWeb".

Prime minister Boris Johnson and chancellor Rishi Sunak signed off on the bid at the 11th hour. Even so, some experts have proposed that hosting a GPS-fashion program on OneWeb's satellites may not be feasible. The deal must still be approved by a US bankruptcy court next week.

Assuming there are no regulatory blockages put in the route of the consortium approach, OneWeb must soon be in a position to start off pulling back again staff that ended up laid off, and to resume the manufacture and launch of its satellites.

"If you want to swap Global Positioning System for armed forces-grade units, wherever you need encrypted, safe indicators that are precise to centimetres, I'm not absolutely sure you can do that on satellites as smaller as OneWeb's", College of Leicester room policy specialist Dr Bleddyn Bowen informed the Guardianprevious 7 days.

Adrian Steckel, CEO of OneWeb commented: "We are delighted to have concluded the sale process with such a positive outcome that will benefit not only OneWeb's existing creditors, but also our employees, vendors, commercial partners, and supporters worldwide who believe in the mission and in the promise of global connectivity".
