In a statement, Rocket Lab said: "An issue was experienced today during Rocket Lab's launch that caused the loss of the vehicle".
The launch, which is named "Pics or It Didn't Happen" is set to take place during a window which opens at 5:19 PM EDT (2:19 PM PDT) and extends until 6:03 PM EDT (3:03 PM EDT), lifting off from Rocket Lab's Launch Complex 1 on the Mahia Peninsula in New Zealand.
"The issue occurred late in the flight during the 2nd stage burn".
One of the satellites being delivered this morning belonged to Canon Electronics, and would have been used for high resolution imaging of Earth.
And, it said: "Planet's satellites are capable of imaging the Earth's entire landmass on a near-daily basis".
Seven satellites from Japan, the U.S. and the United Kingdom lifted off around 9.20am - a day earlier than planned because of bad weather due later this week.

Since its inception, Rocket Lab has put 53 spacecraft into low Earth orbit on 12 separate missions, with this weekend's launch the third for Rocket Lab this year. This is the company's 13th Electron flight, and the next planned test in that system's development is set for flight 17.
