It's not the very first time an attack has been reported at Zoo Zurich.

A visitor witnessing the mauling quickly called for help.

A female Siberian tiger attacked and killed a 55-year-old zookeeper at Zurich's zoo on Saturday (July 4), the authorities said.

Other zoo workers came to the aid of the woman and lured the tiger out of its compound as rescuers attempted to revive the zookeeper.

The zoo said an investigation has been launched into the "tragic incident", including why the keeper was in the enclosure at the same time since the tiger.

The tiger enclosure in Zoo Zurich also has a four-year-old male tiger named Sayan, according to the zoo's website.

The Zurich zoo reopened a month ago after being closed due to the coronavirus crisis.

Zurich Zoo's director was at a loss to explain the horrific act.

The 55-year-old woman died at the zoo after being attacked by the tiger despite rescue forces' resuscitation efforts.

The Siberian tiger was born in 2015 at a zoo in the Danish city of Odense and used in Zurich past year, according to Zoo Zurich director Severin Dressen, pictured right.

Witnesses to the mauling are being offered counseling. Last December, a zookeeper cleaning a crocodile enclosure was attacked by one of the animals.

The crocodile trapped the zookeeper's hand between its teeth and has was eventually shot to death when it refused to release the keeper for several minutes.

The Siberian tiger is the largest cat species, with females weighing up to 185 kilograms, according to the Zürich zoo. Typical specimens grow up to seven feet long and weigh as much as 660 pounds.
