Speaking to reporters last week, Ottawa's medical officer of health said that the City was "seriously exploring" the idea of making face masks mandatory in the city.

Don't forget your masks, Ottawa!

Ottawa's Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Vera Etches confirmed that appropriate face coverings will now be required in all indoor public spaces, starting Tuesday, July 7.

"Increasing scientific evidence indicates that wearing a mask is an important measure in reducing COVID-19 transmission", says Dr.

Dr. Paul Roumeliotis of the Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU), Dr. Paula Stewart of Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit, and Dr. Robert Cushman of the Renfrew County and District Health Unit are the medical health officers who joined Etches in signing off on the joint order.

It should be noted that the policy is being implemented under powers given to the region's medical officer of health by the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act and not through a bylaw, as has been the case in other communities. This allows local health officials to determine the conditions under which businesses are permitted to operate in the province.

Two people remain in the hospital with COVID-19 complications; one is in the ICU.

Wearing a mask is a strong recommendation, said Morrison, not mandatory. "We want people to wear a mask, but it should never replace the need to isolate yourself when sick".

Ottawa Public Health says a mask must cover your mouth, nose and chin to prevent respiratory droplets from your mouth and nose from reaching others or landing on surfaces.

"The policy will be enacted and enforced in good faith and will be primarily used as a means to educate people on mandatory mask use in enclosed public spaces", explained Ottawa Public Health.
