Over $300,000 Pledged for NASA-Developed Outer Space Perfume If you've ever wondered what outer space smells like, a new Kickstarter campaign might have the answer you're looking for.
The Kickstarter, which has raised almost $250,000 so far, seeks to bottle the scent as a fragrance called "Eau de Space", and make it available to the average, curious, space-loving person. The project has 8,533 backers so far and 40 more days to go.
According to a Designboom feature, Eau de Space - developed by chemist and Omega Ingredients founder Steve Pearce - is a perfume based on the scent developed decades ago for astronauts in training to prepare them for extraterrestrial experiences beyond the atmosphere. Speaking to CNN in 2002, Peggy Whitson, an astronaut and former resident of the International Space Station had revealed that the smell of outer space is similar to that of a gun after firing a shot.
According to Matt Richmond, the product director, this smell has been off limits to everyone but astronauts for years, but "Through sheer determination, grit, a lot of luck, and a couple of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, we got it out". It has also partnered with award winning perfumers to develop Eau De Space, and its team has experts from different fields of fashion, tech, design, and logistics.
The firm pooled records of astronauts describing the aroma of the final frontier, which is a mixture of seared steak, raspberries and rum. Yes, a special NASA-designed perfume that smells like outer space will soon be made available for the public.
It looks like the Kickstarter campaign will be successful but there are no plans of manufacturing the perfume after this. This will be more of a "one-off" production.
There are so many things ordinary folk, aka people who are not astronauts, want to know about space.
Currently, you can buy a bottle of Eau de Space on Kickstarter beginning at $US29 ($42), which will let you purchase one four ounce bottle and will donate another to a local K-12 STEM program.
Further guidance on a "phased return" of the performing arts in their venues is expected to be announced in the near future. Scotland will receive £97 million, Wales £59 million and Northern Ireland £33 million.
