'Pink ice' in Alps sparks global warming fears

  • An Italian glacier is turning pink. And that's not good news

However, the debate is still on about where the algae came from.

The mysterious appearance of pink snow in the Italian Alps has sparked concerns over accelerated melting in the European mountain range.

According to a report by AFP, Biagio Di Mauro from Italy's National Research Council said the pink snow observed on parts of the Presena glacier is most likely caused by the same plant found in Greenland.

The phenomenon has been particularly common this year, said Di Mauro, who plans to study it in more detail to determine algae concentration and map the flowers using satellite data. He said the algae is not unsafe and described it as a natural phenomenon that happens in middle latitudes and at the Poles. As Earth's ice sheets disappear, the planet absorbs more heat from the sun, contributing to higher global temperatures. But the most awful is not it: reducing the reflectivity of glaciers, algae accelerate global warming, extend this even further, dimming the snow everywhere, make the temperature rise on the planet of the avalanche process.

A warmer climate and melting ice then improves conditions for the algae, which has more ready access to water and oxygen.

The algae, known as Ancylonema nordenskioeldii, is also present in Greenland's so-called Dark Zone, where the ice is also melting.

In a vicious circle, the algae in turn increases the rate at which the snow melts by accelerating the absorption of radiation.

More algae seem because the ice melts extra quickly, giving them very important water and air and including purple hues to the white ice on the Passo Gavia, altitude 2,618 metres (8,590 toes). "We are trying to quantify the effect of other phenomena besides the human one on the overheating of the Earth", Di Mauro added. "Overheating of the planet is a problem, the last thing we needed was algae", tourist Marta Durante said, adding that there was irreversible damage being done to the environment.

Some Tourists at the glacier, speaking to AFP, lamented the impact of climate change, as reported by France 24. "We are already at the point of no return, I think".
