  • WNBA dedicates season to social justice

Kelly Loeffler is not in favor of the WNBA's social justice plans and has sent a letter to Commissioner Cathy Engelbert objecting to the league's initiatives to honor the Black Lives Matter movement.

Georgia Senator and Atlanta Dream co-owner Loeffler wants "Black Lives Matter" and "Say Her Name" removed from WNBA warmup jerseys and replaced with American flags.

Her letter, first reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, drew swift backlash on Tuesday, with the WNBA Players Association tweeting, "E-N-O-U-G-H! O-U-T!" Shortly after, Engelbert publicly responded in a league statement.

Engelbert also pushed back on Loeffler, saying in a statement released by the league, "The WNBA is based on the principle of equal and fair treatment of all people and we, along with the teams and players, will continue to use our platforms to vigorously advocate for social justice". "Kelly Loeffler has not served as a Governor of the Atlanta Dream since October 2019 and is no longer involved in the day-to-day business of the team".

The senator's stance against the Black Lives Matter protests came into focus in late June following an appearance on Fox News.

But he stopped short of a full endorsement of the 25-year-old, who still has five years remaining on his Stamford Bridge deal. All I want from him, as I want from all the players, is the right mentality, attitude and approach to the games.

After Loeffler, a supporter of the Second Amendment, said that armed Black protesters in Atlanta were practicing "mob rule," Dream guard Renee Montgomery pointed out that Loeffler's Second Amendment support only goes so far.

If she wasn't one before, Loeffler has quickly made herself public enemy number one among WNBA players, as her comments and opinions have been in poor taste for a league that is primarily African American.

Loeffler noted that sports have become too politicized, and called for an end to politics in sports amid such an already divisive time.

Loeffler, who has aligned closely with the Donald Trump regime, has faced growing pressure to sell her stake in the team, which she's co-owned since 2011.

"Though I was not consulted about - nor do I agree with the League's decision in this matter, I am proposing a common-sense recommendation to ensure we reflect the values of freedom and equality for all", she wrote. "And now more than ever, we should be united in our goal to remove politics from sports".
