Siberian Arctic experiences record high temperatures

  • Siberia had its warmest June ever as wildfires raged and carbon dioxide emissions surged

The extreme heat has sparked an unusually high number of wildfires across the remote, boreal forest and tundra that blankets northern Russian Federation, pushing snow cover and surface soil moisture in the Siberian Arctic to record lows for June, C3S, which his funded by the European Union, said.

The unprecedented heat and fires that ravaged Siberia last month came at the tail end of a 12-month period that European researchers revealed Tuesday effectively tied with the hottest year on record based on global surface temperatures, bolstering calls from activists for worldwide bodies and governments across the globe to take immediate action to tackle the climate crisis.

If this year's fires continue to progress like last year "we could see intense activity for the next few weeks". But temperatures in the region have remained well above the 2019 average, which is unusual.

"Higher temperatures and drier surface conditions are providing ideal conditions for these fires to burn and to persist for so long over such a large area", he added.

Global temperatures last month were on par with a 2019 record, and "exceptional warmth" was recorded over Arctic Siberia, the EU's earth observation programme Copernicus said on Tuesday, part of a trend scientists are calling a "warning cry".

Arctic Siberia saw exceptionally high temperatures last month as it sweltered in a heatwave which made it the region's hottest June on record.

During both June, Siberia stands out as the region with the largest anomalies, C3S says.

Temperatures in the region were up to 10 degrees Celsius (18 degrees Fahrenheit) in June above average.

CS3 approximated that japanese Siberia strike a greatest hourly Arctic temperature of 37 levels Celsius (100.4 levels Fahrenheit) on June 20. The exceptions were February and March 2020 which were the second warmest ever recorded in the world.

Earlier in June, parts of Siberia recorded 30C, while in May, Khatanga in Russian Federation - situated in the Arctic Circle at 72 degrees north - set a new May temperature record of 25.4C.

Buontempo said in an emailed statement that many factors contribute to the high temperatures.

In 2020, Copernicus discovered that four of the first six months of the year were the hottest on record globally or tied with previous record temperatures.

"It is in line with predictions of world warming going back again many years now", Professor Martin Siegert, of Imperial School London, says of these exceptional Arctic temperatures. Western Siberia mainly recorded below-average temperatures last month.

'Siberia and the Arctic Circle in general have large fluctuations from year to year and have experienced other relatively warm Junes before.

"What is worrisome is that the Arctic is warming faster than the rest of the world", he continued.

Arctic ice soften has accelerated, which leads to seasonal snow include that isn't really as white and absorbs more sunlight, which qualified prospects to much more warming, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The merger may already be having dramatic consequences.

A massive diesel spill into rivers near the city of Norilsk, Russia resulted when a tank at a power plant built on melting permafrost collapsed in late May.

Changing wind patterns have contributed to mild winter and spring temperatures over western Siberia, and to high temperatures over Arctic Siberia, the agency said.
