Former Republic of Ireland global John Aldridge, who famously had to be calmed down by Charlton on the touchline at the 1994 World Cup, said he was "absolutely gutted".

While playing for his country, Jack scored an impressive six goals in 35 global games.

A number of British clubs joined Leeds United in sharing their condolences on Saturday.

"Leeds United are deeply saddened to learn club legend Jack Charlton passed away last night at the age of 85 following a long-term illness", read a Leeds statement.

Charlton retired from playing at the end of the 1972/73 season, with his final game coming against Southampton on April 28, 1973.

After hanging up his boots, Charlton worked as a manager, taking Middlesbrough into the top-flight in 1974 before moving on to Sheffield Wednesday and Newcastle United.

Despite not being called into the England team until days before his 30th birthday, Charlton won 35 caps and, playing alongside younger brother Bobby, lifted the Jules Rimet Trophy at Wembley in 1966.

At club level, the former centre-back racked up a record 773 appearances for Leeds over the course of a 23-year career, establishing himself as one of the greatest central defenders in the history of English football.

Jack Charlton, a World Cup victor in England's famous 1966 team who spent more than two decades at Leeds United, has died at 85 following a "long-term" illness, his former club have announced.

Former England midfielder Peter Reid tweeted: "RIP Jack, great man". My thoughts are with [Jack's wife] Pat and the family!

Jack Charlton left the Irish job in 1996 after nearly ten years that changed the country forever.

Current Leeds United captain Liam Cooper said Charlton's death was "a very sad day".

"If there was ever a more prominent year for us to go up it's now, let's do it for Jack, Norman and Trevor". He enriched so many lives through football, friendship and family.

"Our deepest sympathies are with Jack's family, friends and former clubs".

Independent football writer Miguel Delaney: "Jack Charlton was the biggest football figure of my youth, and no doubt the same for two generations of Irish people".
