A newly discovered comet is streaking past Earth, providing a stunning night-time show after buzzing the sun and expanding its tail. Its close proximity to the sun caused dust and gas to burn off its surface and create an even bigger debris tail.
On July 22, the comet will reach its closest point to Earth - a distance of 103 million kilometres - but because comets can be unpredictable, a little like the weather, experts are not sure that it will still be visible to the naked eye.
Astrophysicist Karl Battams of the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Washington said its nucleus is a 3-mile wide "dirty snowball" left over from the formation of the solar system about 4.6 billion years ago. Right now, the comet is visible to the naked eye, but a good pair of binoculars would offer a better view.
