  • PM Trudeau apologizes for not recusing himself from WE volunteering decision

"We recognized that the situation continues to be complex in the U.S. in regards to COVID-19", said Trudeau during his daily briefing.

He said Monday his family's longtime involvement with the WE organization should have kept him out of the discussions. "I know people have concerns about it, I get that".

"I'm sincerely sorry (for) not having done that", Trudeau said.

The grant program, meant to help students struggling to find summer jobs during the Covid-19 pandemic, has been stymied by the controversy and the government is now looking for a different way to administer it.

Trudeau said he knew his family worked with the charity, but said he was unaware of how much they had been paid. "The mistake we made was on me".

"I deeply regret that I have brought my mother into this situation". I should have been thoughtful enough to recuse myself completely from any discussions around WE because of these connections, from the very beginning, and I did not.
