The Verge rapporte que " le FBI, l'IRS, les services secrets américains et les forces de l'ordre de Floride ont placé un jeune de 17 ans à Tampa en état d'arrestation, l'accusant d'être le cerveau derrière la plus grande violation de la sécurité et de la confidentialité de l'histoire de Twitter ". D'après la même source, l'adolescent est actuellement en prison, poursuivi par plus de 30 chefs d'accusation, y compris de fraude organisée, fraude aux communications, vol d'identité, piratage informatique, selon le Procureur d'Etat de Hillsboroug, Andrew Warren. Deux autres personnes ont par ailleurs été inculpées.

"Mason Sheppard, alias Chaewon, 19 ans, domicilié au Royaume-Uni, a été inculpé pour complot en vue de commettre une fraude électronique, complot en vue de commettre un blanchiment d'argent et accès intentionnel à un ordinateur protégé", détaille le texte.

Il aurait ainsi récolté plus de 100 000 dollars en une journée. Précisant que la loi de la Floride autorisait à inculper des mineurs comme des adultes pour fraude financière. "Je veux dire aux contrevenants potentiels, enfreignez la loi et nous vous trouverons", a-t-il lancé, cité dans un communiqué.
