The craft is now said to have returned to its regular temperature, but safe mode has affected communications between the spacecraft and ground control, Business Insider reports.
The complicated route to the Mars Sample Return mission involves NASA collaborating with the European Space Agency and worldwide partners.
"As the spacecraft entered into Earth's shadow, the Sun was temporarily blocked by Earth, and the outlet temperature dropped", said Wallace.
"The mission addresses high-priority science goals for Mars exploration, including key questions about the potential for life on Mars", NASA said.
Safe mode can only be turned off by new commands from mission control, but as of now NASA says it isn't too anxious. And given the difficulty of this multi-pronged return journey of the samples, they won't land on Earth until 2031, at the earliest.
Scientists have long debated whether Mars - once a much more hospitable place than it is today - ever harbored life. Perseverance also features seven instruments, including the Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment or MOXIE, which seeks to demonstrate the ability to turn carbon dioxide into oxygen.
Aboard the rover are the Sample Caching System and the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter, a technology demonstrator that will perform up to five controlled flights. The data acquired during these flight tests will help the next generation of Mars helicopters provide an aerial dimension to Mars explorations - potentially scouting for rovers and human crews, transporting small payloads, or investigating difficult-to-reach destinations. We are going to Jezero Crater.
It is expected to land on the planet on February 18, 2021.
The United States plans to send astronauts to Mars in the 2030s under a program that envisions using a return to the moon as a testing platform for human missions before making the more ambitious crewed Martian voyage. NASA's Launch Services Program, based at the agency's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, is responsible for launch management, and ULA provided the Atlas V rocket.
