  • First ‘murder hornet’ trapped in Washington State

"This is encouraging because it means we know that the traps work", Sven Spichiger, the managing entomologist for WSDA, said in a press release.

Washington state agricultural officials are asking beekeepers and residents to report any sightings of the giant hornets. Chris Looney, a entomologist in charge of exotic pests at the Washington State Department of Agriculture, spoke to CBS Sunday Morning about the previous five hornets detected and their predatory impact on honeybees. In Japan, they kill up to 50 people a year. WSDA trappers checked the bottle trap on July 14 and submitted the contents for processing at WSDA's entomology lab.

An Asian giant hornet (also known as a murder hornet) has been trapped for the first time since an initial spotting near Bellingham this December.

The arrival of Asian Giant Hornets into the United States was first noted in early May, with scary viral videos of hornets eating mice and, vice versa, getting eaten by a praying mantis, spreading online and causing concerns among some Americans.

The Washington State Department of Agriculture has trapped its first Asian giant hornet.

How concerned should the USA be about "murder hornets"? "But it also means we have work to do".

More problems surfaced in Saturday practice, and his final lap in qualifying was deleted because his auto exceeded track limits. The pair collided on the opening lap of the second race in Austria, the Steiermark Grand Prix, with both retiring.

The state Department of Agriculture said officials' next steps include setting up additional traps and tracking down nests using infrared cameras.

WSDA officials aren't the only ones laying traps.

Scientists hope to locate and destroy the nest by mid-September, so that hornets do not have the chance to increase in numbers. "Citizen scientists and other cooperators" have helped place over 1,300 traps throughout the state, the department said. Those interested in trapping can still build and set their own traps on their property.

"They all start vibrating their flight muscles and they actually create so much heat in this process that they cook the hornet, and the carbon dioxide that's produced in the process also totally can suffocate the hornet as well", Ramsey said. "Destroying the nest before new queens emerge and mate will prevent the spread of this invasive pest".
