About 125,000 people in Quebec aged 18-69 are estimated to have contracted COVID-19, according to a new study published Wednesday by Quebec's blood collection agency - more than three times the official number reported by health authorities. "Germain stated while it is reassuring that the" vast bulk" of individuals infected with COVID-19 endure,"we cannot forget there's still a considerable quantity of passing.

Quebec announced two more people have died of COVID-19 in the province as of Tuesday, bringing the province's death toll from the virus to 5,685.

Hema-Quebec's antibody analysis included a sample of seven, 691 individuals elderly 18-69 who contributed blood between May 25 and July 9. This is different from COVID-19 screening tests, which determine whether someone is now infected.

The Quebec government reported some 37,000 cases for the 20 to 69 age group in the same period.

De Serres clarified the study isn't complete.

After the test result, the public health department has to get in touch with the new case to find out where the person has been and who they came into contact with so those contacts can be warned.

The trick to handling the outbreak, De Serres explained, would be to understand how many individuals infected with COVID-19 are symptomatic. "However, when there's an increase in the volume of testing, like in recent weeks with the appeal to people who went to bars in Montreal, it's possible that the delay goes from 24 hours to 72 hours".

Wednesday's study is part of a series of COVID-19 research produced by Hema-Quebec.

A national study of blood samples conducted by Canadian Blood Services and Canada's COVID-19 Immunity Task Force found that fewer then one per cent of samples had COVID-19 antibodies. In some cases, Germain said, they disappeared.

"However, does this mean there's absolutely not any protection?"

But the doctor said he is not particularly anxious that people who have recovered from COVID-19 might have a reactivation of the disease years down the road, as is the case with those who catch such viruses as chickenpox or herpes.

Considering what scientists understand about coronaviruses and that which studies now understand concerning COVID-19, he explained,"I would be very, very surprised when we detect all of a sudden, at several decades, that many of individuals have a chronic illness or reactivation".
