A group of white Kenosha, Wisconsin police officers shot 29-year-old Jacob Blake, an unarmed black man, 7 times in the back on Sunday as he got into a auto.

Armed rioters shut down streets in Kenosha, Wisconsin on Sunday night as the city fell into chaos after a police-involved shooting earlier in the evening. Police said he was in a serious condition in hospital after the shooting.

Neighbours confronted law enforcement at the scene of a police shooting in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Sunday and crowds marched in the streets after a video posted on social media appeared to show officers shoot at a man's back seven times as he leaned into a vehicle.

Following the shooting, social media posts showed neighbours gathering in the surrounding streets and hurling comments at police.

Video shared widely on social media shows the confrontation between officers from the Kenosha Police Department and a man named in local media as Jacob Blake. Some could be heard chanting, "No justice, no peace", while others appeared to throw objects at officers and damage police vehicles.

A man could be seen breaking the window of a patrol auto parked along the street.

An unarmed black man, Jacob Blake, 29, has been shot seven times by a white cop in front of his children in Wisconsin, United States, Daily Mail reports. Outside the station, protesters faced off with officers who wore plastic facemasks and held batons that they occasionally used to push people back.

A large group of rioters - including at least two armed rioters - blocked a police armored auto from proceeding down a street.

Evers meanwhile indicated an intention to further respond to the shooting.

"While we do not have all of the details yet, what we know for certain is that he is not the first Black man or person to have been shot or injured or mercilessly killed at the hands of individuals in law enforcement in our state or our country", Evers said according to the AP.

"We stand against excessive use of force and immediate escalation when engaging with Black Wisconsinites", Mr Evers wrote.

"I have said all along that although we must offer our empathy, equally important is our action".

A Kenosha Police Department dispatcher referred calls by The Associated Press to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, the agency that will be investigating the shooting.

Police responded by imposing a city-wide curfew until 7 a.m. local time (1200 GMT).

A state of emergency has, however, been declared in the County of Kenosha; a curfew is in effect.
