UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has called on parents to allow their children to go back to school, insisting that continuing their education is "vitally important" and skipping classes is actually worse for kids than Covid-19.
He added: "This battle over schools reopening must see the Prime Minister in the lead, galvanising his inner Churchill".
The chief medical officers of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales said in their statement that children are less likely to catch COVID-19 than adults and they have "an exceptionally low risk" of dying from the disease.
"We have always been guided by our scientific and medical experts, and we now know far more about coronavirus than we did earlier this year".
Mr Johnson said: "I have previously spoken about the moral duty to reopen schools to all pupils safely, and I would like to thank the school staff who have spent the summer months making classrooms Covid-secure in preparation for a full return in September".
Using data from June, the PHE said that only 0.01% of open schools had an outbreak, and that out of more than 1 million children attending pre-school and primary school in June, just 70 children were affected.
He issued a joint statement with the UK's chief and deputy chief medical officers seeking to reassure parents that it was safe to send their children back to school.

Prof Whitty said that while the risk of children contracting Covid-19 was "not zero" the evidence that not going to school damages children in the long run was "overwhelming".
However, infection spreading between school staff members is a concern, and the government wants social distancing to be maintained at all times - not only in the classroom but also in all other environments where people can meet.
The PM added that missing any more school would be "far more damaging" to kids than the coronavirus itself, claiming that the risk of contracting the virus in schools across the country was "very small".
Education unions have called for greater clarity on how schools should handle a spike in coronavirus cases.
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said Mr Johnson's commitment to get all children back to school was at "serious risk" after a "week of chaos" over exam results. "To restore confidence among parents, pupils and teachers the best thing the Prime Minister could do is sack him, rather than speak for him".
