Fire erupts in landmark building in Beirut | MEO

A fire has broken out in a building in Beirut near the city's port where an explosion killed almost 200 people, wounded thousands and left the city's residents traumatised last month. The Zaha Hadid building, a new commercial complex designed by the late British-Iraqi architect, has been under construction for years and was nearing completion when the fire broke out. Videos on social media showed firefighters attempting to extinguish the flames as smoke billowed from the building and over the Hilton hotel next door.

According to local media reports, the fire erupted near the entrance of the Beirut International Exhibition and Leisure Center, also known as BIEL, which hosts conferences and other cultural events. "We are discovering hotspots of the blaze", a member of the Lebanese civil defence told Sputnik.
