The German FA has opened an investigation into Toni Leistner after the Hamburg defender climbed into the stands to confront Dynamo Dresden fans on Monday night.

The German broke from being interviewed after suffering a 4-1 defeat in the DFB-Pokal first round to make his way into the supporters area to aggressively confront the fan.

After, Leistner said in an Instagram story that he had confronted the fan after hearing verbal abuse and taunts directed at his family.

The defender - who joined Hamburg after leaving Queen's Park Rangers last month - clashed with a Dresden fan in the stands after the final whistle.

Leistner was born in Dresden and played for Dynamo between 2010 and 2014.

Leistner resumed his interview looking extremely irritated and later released a statement on his Instagram account, claiming the insults he heard was "massively below the belt", but apologising unreservedly for his actions.

"Usually, I can handle that but then it went below the belt against my family, my wife and my daughter. I only saw that Toni Leistner returned from the stands", Hamburg coach Daniel Thioune said during the post-match news conference. "In the moment, my fuse blew, especially since this was an extremely emotional game for me", Leistner revealed. I am a father who wants to serve as a role model. "I apologise for my behaviour and can only promise that - no matter what insults are thrown at me- something like this will never happen again".

The incident happened in front of a 10,053 strong crowd at the Rudolf-Harbig-Stadion, the biggest attendance at a soccer match in Germany since the coronavirus lockdown.

"What I can add is that Toni Leistner has his heart in the right place and is always welcome in Dresden. Emotions are part of football", he said.
