Iran has been critical of both deals.

These remarks came in parallel with the declaration of the Israeli Mossad Chief Yossi Cohen on Sunday evening that other states are making deals with Israel.

Trump is up for re-election on November 3 and the accords could help him shore up support among pro-Israel Christian evangelical voters, an important part of his political base.

Additionally he said "we're very far down the road with about five additional countries". So far, the Saudis, whose king is custodian of Islam's holiest sites and rules the world's largest oil exporter, have signalled they are not ready.

Oman was expected to send its ambassador to Tuesday's ceremony, a senior USA official said.

Although a diplomatic win for Netanyahu, the signing ceremony takes place while he faces criticism at home of his handling of the coronavirus pandemic and a corruption trial on charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust that has led to frequent street protests.

Netanyahu denies any wrongdoing and describes his trial as a leftist political witch-hunt aimed at unseating a popular right-wing leader.

Israel, Bahrain and the UAE are expected to sign a trilateral document, in addition to the bilateral agreements.

The official declined to provide specifics.

In a nod to the coronavirus that has hit the United States and the world, the White House is encouraging but not requiring the participants to wear masks. Though the mood of the ceremony is expected to be warm, it will be up to the leaders whether they want to shake hands, the official told reporters.

The Emiratis may also be wary of appearing too close to Netanyahu, who publicly stated in August his opposition to the sale of US-made F-35 stealth fighter jets to the UAE.

President Trump on Tuesday declared a "historic day for peace" as he was scheduled to preside over the signing of two historic Middle East diplomatic deals between Israel and two Gulf nations.

"King Hamad and Prime Minister Netanyahu express their deep appreciation to President Trump for his dedication to peace in the region, his focus on shared challenges, and the pragmatic and unique approach he has taken to bringing their nations together", the statement adds.

Saudi officials had previously stressed that the kingdom will not normalise relations with Israel outside of the framework of the Arab peace initiative, which calls for establishing a Palestinian state.

Palestinians view the new agreements as weakening a long-standing pan-Arab position that calls for Israeli withdrawal from occupied territories and acceptance of Palestinian statehood in return for normal relations with Arab countries.

That was followed by the first direct commercial flight between the countries, and then the September 11 announcement of the Bahrain-Israel agreement.
