‘South Park’ set to take on pandemic with coronavirus special

COVID-19 comes to "South Park" in an upcoming episode of the show called "The Pandemic Special". Comedy Central has released a teaser trailer for the special, which marks the first time in the show's 23-year history that it's airing an hour-long episode. The episode in question will air on the cable network on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Randy comes to terms with his role in the COVID-19 outbreak as the on-going pandemic presents continued challenges to the citizens of South Park.

The "South Park" kids return to school - in the teaser, they're seen with plexiglass guards around their desks - "but nothing resembles the normal that they once knew", Cartman included.

Series creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone will of course write and executive produce the special. The duo have written, directed and edited every episode of "South Park" since it premiere back in 1997.

The most recent season finished airing in December 2019. I understand that the show is skewering actual businesses that have done similar things, but frankly, anything involving Tegridy Farms has become so grating that I no longer trust that the execution will be amusing - and when South Park loses its humor, it just sort of feels like a wandering, angry show that's a shadow of its former self. Eric Stough, Adrien Beard, Bruce Howell, Jack Shia and Vernon Chatman are producers on the show.
