Argentina forward Messi, 33, tried to leave the club this summer and called the transfer saga "a brutal drama".

"I can't explain what happened in recent seasons because I wasn't here - there were different players and coaches - but if we fail this season, I will be able to tell you why", Koeman said as Barcelona braces for its return to the European Cup against the Hungarians at home on Tuesday.

"But he's happy. He works hard and wants to be a captain". I have no complaints. He has also had bad luck.

Barcelona kick off their Champions League campaign Ferencvarosi TC at the Nou Camp on Tuesday, October 20.

In that context, and with Koeman's words ringing in the ears of the Barcelona faithful, Tuesday night at the Nou Camp offers the chance for Messi to get back on the scoresheet, and more importantly back on the path to the kind of form Barcelona so desperately need from him.

The six-time Ballon d'Or victor was close to leaving the Catalans earlier in the summer with Manchester City and a few other clubs ready to welcome him.
