Powerful natural disaster hits off Alaska coast, triggering tsunami warning

A magnitude 7.4 natural disaster was reported Monday afternoon at 1:54 p.m. 58 miles from Sand Point, Alaska. Officials in B.C. say they're still evaluating the threat to local coastlines.

The National Weather Service announced a tsunami warning for residents in South Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula soon after the jolt, but said the risk level is still being evaluated for "other United States and Canadian Pacific coasts in North America." .

Officials had originally warned of the possibility of hazardous tsunami waves within 300 kilometres of the quake's epicentre, and people living in that region were advised to move inland or to higher ground. Emergency Info BC says that risk to BC is now being evaluated.

Initially the USGS measured the natural disaster at 7.4 magnitutude, but that was quickly revised to 7.5.

According to a follow up Tweet from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, a 2-foot-tall tsunami was seen at Sand Point.

The quake was registered some 55 miles (90km) south of Sand Point, Alaska on Monday, at a depth of almost 25 miles (40km).

It said a magnitude 5.2 aftershock was reported 11 minutes later, centred roughly in the same area.
