Several covid-19 vaccine trials are now in their most advanced (phase 3) stage, but what will it mean exactly when a vaccine is declared "effective"?

A volunteer participating in clinical trials of the Covid-19 vaccine developed by Oxford University has died in Brazil, officials announced Wednesday, though media reports said he had received a placebo, not the test vaccine. However, the independent committee overseeing these trials concluded that the woman's case was either unlikely to be connected to the vaccine or that there wasn't enough evidence to confirm one way or the other.

According to Reuters, Brazilian health authorities revealed "that a volunteer in a clinical trial of the COVID-19 vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University had died".

Brazil's health authority Anvisa said it had been informed on Monday of the study volunteer's death and had received a partial report from an worldwide committee assessing the trial's safety.

However, global reports this week suggested the US Food and Drug Administration had completed its review and AstraZeneca would resume its trial as early as this week.

Zaks confirmed to the London-based medical journal that Moderna's trial will not show prevention of hospitalization because the size and duration of the trial would need to be vastly increased to collect the necessary data.

The trials have since resumed in the United Kingdom and in Brazil, however they are still on hold in the U.S. The brazilian regulator said that the trial is bound to coninue regardless of this. It provided no further details, citing the medical confidentiality of those involved in trials.
